Balti (medium) Oh Err! That’s a Bit Saucy!

(10 customer reviews)

Balti is a style of cooking, almost like a stir fry. It’s said to be invented in the UK. Birmingham lays claim to being the birthplace of Balti. Balti literally translates from the Punjabi as bucket! Balti describes the pot in which food is cooked and served, a flat-bottomed, two-handled wok.

Serve with Curry On Bombay Potatoes, Basmati rice, quinoa or any Indian bread like naan or chapattis. Check out our recipe page for a quick and easy chapatti recipe.

The Recipes

The recipes in the kits are designed as a guide. Feel free to make these dishes your own. If you fancy a bit more sauciness in your life add a splash of coconut milk or an extra tin of tomatoes. The kits are so versatile; rub into fish meat or fish before throwing on the BBQ, or in the oven.   Go crazy and experiment!

These sugar free kits are low in fat; for an even healthier option the cooking oil, can be replaced with spray oil. The cream in the Tikka Masala and Korma can be replaced with coconut milk, crème fraiche or yoghurt.

Feel free to substitute the meat for other types of meat e.g. lamb/pork If using alternative meat adjust cooking times depending on the meat.   Any vegetables or mixed vegetables can be used. Tofu and soya also work great with the kits. When cooking with fish it’s best to use a firm fleshed, robust fish such as monkfish or halibut which doesn’t fall apart in the pan too quickly.

KEEP CALM as you have a range of options to reduce the heat of the dish. Add a dash of lemon or lime juice. The acid should help in reducing the heat. Vinegar also is a good addition.   Spooning in more liquid can help. Dairy helps to temper the spices, stir in a couple of tablespoons of natural/Greek yoghurt, sour cream or coconut milk.

Eating raita made out of natural or Greek yogurt helps to cool things down as does a sweet or salty lassi.

Chuck in some extra chillies we prefer fresh but any kind works just as well.

works great as a seasoning….I sprinkle some on chicken thighs and pop in the oven wrapped in foil

Had some friends over at the weekend. Cooked Balti Chiken they loved it . One of the guests had three helpings said it was the best curry he had ever eaten. I have been using the mixes for over a year now much easier than having loads of spices which tend to loose flavour over time and also saves having to measure out spices ever time you cook a curry.
    Highly recommend 5 star.

  3. Amanda

Highly recommend trying this. My friends and family loved it with chunks of lamb. Gorgeous dish. Food for the gods. Brilliant with bombay potatoes too.

  4. Paula brown

I wasn’t sure about using the mixes as I usually cook from scratch but it was so easy and very. Delicious. I will definitely be buying more. I bought mine from the Derbyshire day but will buy online or go to Bennetts of Derby.

Cooking a Quorn chicken balti with cauliflower, in the slow cooker (requested by customers) for my bar tomorrow, tastes amazing, the lads are going to love it.
I love “Curry On” so much, i’m launching my own curry night once a week in my bar, using these products

Well done Spice Sisters – lots of love xx

I used this pack for the first time over Christmas when I had some friends over and I’m pleased to say it went down incredibly well.

More importantly (for me and my completely inadequate kitchen skills at least) it was really easy to use and it was impossible to make something that didn’t taste great!

I’d recommend these curry kits to anyone!

Had the best Balti ever using this all natural balti kit the aromas coming from the kitchen had everyone popping in to see when it would be ready! ! Now you don’t get that with jar curry ..clean empty plates now I call that a result I for one will not be buying jar curries looking forward to trying out the rest in your range..if anywhere as nice as this ..they too will be winners .
Thanks again for inviting and exciting my taste buds ..wonderful is an understatement

Bought the Balti kit from the Great British Food Festival at Hardwick Hall Chesterfield, really wish I had bought more! Did a chicken Balti and it was delicious! I’ve just ordered another 5 kits and we’re really looking forward to trying the other kits. Easy as pie to make and highly recommend! Going to get the old man to make the next one!

Awesome taste! Can’t get enough of this, made with chicken thigh meat and served with a handful of chopped coriander – life just doesn’t get any better!

Such an amazing Curry! So much better then any Indian takeaway and a lot healthier too as there’s no added sugar! Curry on cooking will now be a staple in my kitchen cupboard!!
